First and foremost, we want you to learn. Wedding Film Retreat was started by Sarah and Rick Pendergraft to be a place where the tight-knit community of wedding filmmakers can come together to learn more about their craft. Whether you want to hone some skills you already have, see things from a different perspective, or learn something completely new, this is the place for you!

Here are just a few things you can expect to learn at this retreat:

The Power of Editing
Following a one-on-one mentoring session with another videographer, he said, “There’s a major take away from your work that sets you apart and gives you tons more content/story/etc and I can’t figure out just how you do it exactly.” We believe song selection and a strong attention to detail in editing and crafting the story arc are what set our work apart. It’s not as simple as “use this LUT” or as sexy as “buy this new gear.” It requires an in-depth look at story structure, so we will spend a large amount of time breaking down an edit to show how we craft our award-winning films.

Making the Perfect Film in Imperfect Situations
Questions we’ve been asked more times than we can count; “How do you keep photographers out of your shots?” “How do you get such a variety of shots with just two people?” “Your couples all seem so perfect, how do you book these people?” Strong communication skills and the ability to adapt are crucial to running a successful wedding film business. We’ll address the above questions and more, with personal stories and hands-on shooting time.

Ever notice how many companies in the wedding industry tend to have a limited shelf-life? That’s because many people sell themselves on what’s trendy or the current “hot” thing. It’s easy to laugh now at selective color in photos or star transitions in videos, but those were very attractive and heavily used features at one time… and the same things exist today (cough, film burn, cough cough). It is possible to make films that are a must-have while still being timeless. We’ll show you how we balance “classic” and “trendy” by putting the basics first, but always looking to incorporate something special like aerials, Glidecam footage, and free-lensing.

Playing nice with others What to do (and what not to do) in order to get referrals from wedding planners.

Attracting your ideal client Reach the perfect couples. Whether it be the high end weddings you’re in search of or the perfect personalities that match yours, learn how to market to your ideal couples.

Getting your work featured We’ve all seen behind the scenes of styled shoots. Have you done one yet? If not, having a relationship with a planner may help!

Marketing/branding, having a look that is attractive to clients as well as other vendors Are you building a brand for yourself, or for others to like and refer? There is a difference and we’ll break it down!

Take your film to the next ‘level’
Whether you want to incorporate drones in your work, or already do, captain, FAA check pilot and certified flight instructor Scott Strimple will share invaluable knowledge, tips and tricks in a two-part session. First, we’ll spend time in the classroom to talk FAA 107 test prep. After that, we’ll head outside to see Scott work his magic and have hands-on time with quadcopters.

By now you’ve figured out that we want you to relax and learn on this trip. No need to worry about where to eat, how to get there, or who pays. When we say all-inclusive, we mean it. There are only two things not covered: your travel to and from the event and alcohol. We take care of the rest.

    Dive head first into a detailed breakdown of a PenWeddings short film to see how we craft our award-winning videos with purposeful sound design and precision that could qualify as OCD.

    Designer & planner Lindsay Gibson shares how to sell yourself both to clients and other wedding pros, and what to do and what not to do to get referrals from planners.

  • Evening Session

    2:15pm - 5:00pm
    Let's talk gear! Lighting... audio... motion... We'll use this time to show how PenWeddings approaches a shoot using vignettes set up by Gibson Events, and to get hands-on with those vignettes as well as shooting around the resort property.

    Led by pilot Scott Strimple, this session will be broken into two portions... classroom time for Part 107 test prep, followed by hands-on time with drones around the property.
